Vintage city posters
A vintage town poster has been designed to promote events, places, products or services of seaside towns or destinations. It embodies a retro aesthetic, often dating from an earlier era, usually between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. Vintage city posters are characterized by distinctive artistic styles such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernism, or other artistic movements of the era, with iconic designs, typographies, and illustrations of that era. period.
The development of Tourism
It was during the second half of the 19th century that tourism experienced a strong boom - travel took the form of a pleasure and was no longer just utilitarian. In England, Thomas Cook founded the first travel company in 1841 . This new activity is fueled by progress in various forms of transport: trains and boats initially, then the plane which made significant technological progress, particularly after the First World War.
Travelers from all over the world can then discover destinations that were unknown to them. In France, Aéropostale can transport North Africa then Central Africa, Asia and the Orient. The world's major cities are interconnected and enable commercial, social and diplomatic exchanges.
Europe and particularly France are also seeing the development of seaside resorts and their sea bathing . The concept is to attribute benefits to stays in coastal towns (Saint-Malo, Boulogne sur Mer, Aix-les-Bains, Cannes and many others): contact with sea water would have invigorating properties.
In fact, it is the entire French coastline ( Picardie coast, Pink granite coast, Basque coast, Esterel coast etc. ) which saw seaside resorts flourish at the beginning of the 20th century. Corsica is also becoming a popular destination for tourism. This development was increased by the enthusiasm for this new practice and by the appearance of paid leave in 1930 which pushed an entire population towards new activities.
The production of advertising posters to promote cities welcoming tourists will then develop to promote travel to different cities. Just as with other industries, the Tourism industry called on the greatest artists of the time (Mucha, D'Alesi, Roger Broders and many others) to produce posters extolling the merits of cities and seaside resorts. It should be noted that transport companies, particularly railway companies, will often partner with tourist offices to produce these posters. Indeed, transport companies and tourist offices find a common interest in moving travelers to targeted destinations.
